HOW TO:

Make a Leaf Wall Hanging

This is a quick and easy gift to make for someone as a housewarming, birthday, or Christmas gift.  Be sure to coordinate the colors with the decor of the room that you are making it for.

Supplies:

  • Cardboard or plastic to make leaf template and circle template
  • Trim Scisors
  • Canvas (any size) for acrylic paint
  • Three separate coordinating pieces of scrapbook paper
  • Any color acrylic paint
  • Foam Paintbrushes
  • Mod Podge

Instructions:

1. Use a pencil to draw your leaf template and a circle template for your flower center on cardboard. Cut out the two templates to use as your pattern for the flower.

2. Trace the circle template onto one piece of scrapbook paper.  Next begin tracing the leaf template onto the back of your scrapbook paper.  Make as many leaves as you can get out of each piece of scrapbook paper.  You will only need one center circle for the flower.   After you are finished tracing all leaves and the one circle, use scissors to cut out all shapes.

3.  Paint the canvas with one to two coats of acrylic paint. Be sure to let thoroughly dry between coats of paint.  Do not forget to paint the sides of the canvas as well.

4. Once the canvas is dry, lay out your flower design.  Put the circle about 3/4 of the way down the canvas and off-center.  Next begin placing your leaf shapes around the circle to form your flower.  Be sure to stagger the three different types of scrapbook paper so that you achieve a desirable pattern. When you have the design that you are happy with you can begin to permanently adhere the pieces of scrapbook paper to the canvas.

5. Now that your pattern is laid out, begin by applying Mod Podge to the back of your scrapbook paper shapes and "gluing" them to the canvas.  When all pieces have been glued down, let set for 15-20 minutes before completing last step.  Once everything is dry then Mod Podge over the entire canvas, painted areas as well as scrapbook paper.  This seals everything to the canvas.  You are now ready to hang your piece of art on the wall or present it to that special person as a gift.
