Michael Vranos - History of Professional and Philanthropic Achievement
A prominent figure in the mortgage bond trading industry, Michael Vranos has gained considerable attention for his accomplishments in collateralized mortgage obligation investing. With the Old Greenwich, Connecticut-based Ellington Management Group, LLC, Michael Vranos has spent the past two decades leading a top mortgage- and asset-backed investment and advisory firm; at present, he oversees in excess of $5 billion in assets. Recent developments at Ellington Management Group include the launch of Ellington Financial LLC and Ellington Residential Mortgage REIT, two New York Stock Exchange-listed investment companies that chiefly target non-agency and agency-backed mortgage securities, respectively.
Notable for his philanthropy as well, Mr. Vranos gives whenever possible to such charities as The Shelter for the Homeless in Stamford, Connecticut; The East Harlem School; and Harlem’s Boys & Girls Harbor, where he serves on the board of directors. Also a longtime director of Hedge Funds Care, Mr. Vranos garnered the organization’s Lifetime Award for Caring in 2007.
Michael Vranos began his career following receipt of an AB in mathematics, magna cum laude, from Harvard University, where he earned selection to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. From Harvard, Mr. Vranos joined Kidder, Peabody & Co. and subsequently became one of the best-known mortgage bond traders in the country, gaining recognition from Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, and other publications. Named a senior managing director at Kidder, Peabody, Mr. Vranos underwrote more than $200 billion in CMOs during his final years with the company.
