1. EasyBib

DESCRIPTION
EasyBib allows users to create MLA, APA and Chicago style citations. To create an accurate citation, all you need to do is scan a book's barcode or type in the name of the book. EasyBib allows you to export and email your reference list!

Below is a great video that explains how to use the app!

SUITABLE GRADES 9-12

CLASS Social Studies (however, it can be used for any class you have your students citing sources)

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

This app would be extremely helpful in English and Social Studies classrooms in particular. I have seen first-hand how many people, myself included, do not know how to properly site once they have entered post-secondary schooling. Individuals should not be learning how to properly use MLA citation for the first time when they are in university or college. I think it is of uttermost importance that we teach our students in school how to properly cite and give recognition to works, ideas, and music that they themselves have not created. If I were to assign a research paper in a grade 10 Social Studies class, I would encourage my students to download and use this app when creating their bibliographies. This app would provide them with just the right help!

2. EarthViewer

DESCRIPTION

EarthViewer allows users to view what the Earth looked like all throughout history, even as far back as 4.5 billion years ago! It provides historical information about the Earth`s climate, geography, and topography.

SUITABLE GRADES 7-9

CLASS Science

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

As soon as I found this app I instantly thought about how useful it would be in a grade 7 science class! During the unit about the Earth`s properties (tectonic plates, climate, etc.), this app would be great in that it would give my students an in depth look at how the Earth has changed over the last 4.5 billion years! I really think that grade 7 students would love this app and providing them with all this information at their fingertips would make learning fun!

3. Sight Words for Reading HD

DESCRIPTION

This app allows students to learn words that are most common in children`s literature. The words are presented to students in fun videos which help them learn the meanings of words and increase their reading comprehension skills.

SUITABLE GRADES 1-4

CLASS English Language Arts

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

This app would be particularly useful in a grade 1-4 classroom. During a Language Arts or reading comprehension lesson, allow students to watch a couple videos with headphones that I have selected would benefit students greatly. Sight Words for Reading really provides a fun and engaging alternative to traditional ways reading comprehension can be taught and learned!

4. TED

DESCRIPTION

The TED app provides videos on virtually any subject you can imagine. TED Talks delivers passionate arguments from people that love learning.

SUITABLE GRADES 11 & 12 (videos usually contain advanced content)

CLASS All subject areas!

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

One thing I loved about grade 12 was the fact that my religion, English, and Social teachers all showed us TED Talks on YouTube. I found that the videos provided me with a different way to learn and hearing such passionate people speak really motivated me to learn the material. I would really love to use the TED app in a grade 12 Social Studies classroom. There are so many talks available relating to history and politics. Showing a video at the start of each week, I think, would probably motivate students to come to class and make their Mondays just a little bit better!

5. Khan Academy

DESCRIPTION

Khan Academy provides materials and resources in every subject imaginable. Over 3500 videos (tutorials and explanations) are available at your fingertips!

SUITABLE GRADES 10-12

CLASS primarily the sciences, but it does contain videos on the humanities as well.

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

What`s amazing about Khan Academy is the sheer volume of subjects it covers! I would love to have my students use this app after class time as a means of supplementing the resources I give them in class. In a grade 10 biology class, when I am teaching my class about cells, I would give them a worksheet to take home and provide them with the corresponding Khan Academy video that I have selected. Assuming all my students have some sort of Apple compatible mobile device, this would work perfectly. The video would give my students quite an in depth explanation of cells and their parts and would build on what I have taught them in class. This would definitely give students a new way to learn and give them that extra help that they need from the comfort of their couch.

Below is Khan Academy's YouTube video on the parts of a cell. This video would also be available on the app!

6. Quizlet

DESCRIPTION

Quizlet allows users to study from anywhere at anytime; it doesn't even require an internet connection! Users can create flashcards for any subject and the app even contains 18 different languages which is exceptionally helpful when studying for language classes.

SUITABLE GRADES 9-12

CLASS Any class.

HOW IT CAN BE USED IN CLASSROOM

This app would be especially beneficial to students in a Social Studies classroom. For example, if I were teaching the events of WWI, I could provide my students with a list of important terms and then have them create their own study flashcards. I could provide them with terms such as trench warfare, the Ottoman Empire, armistice, and Treaty of Versailles. This app would really help my students organize their studying and help them better their studying habits!
