Kallmann syndrome  

A condition characterized by delayed or absent puberty and an impaired sense of smell.

Meaning In males they have an unusually small genital area. Females have little or no breasts. puberty in some are delayed or incomplete.

Failure of the development of one kidney. Sex glands called gonads are affected. Gonads are in testes in men and ovaries in women.

Signs and symptoms

failure of one kidney to develop, cleft lip or cleft pallet. Abnormal eye movement, hearing loss, abnormalities of tooth development. Also some can have a condition called binaural synkinesis which is movement of one band mirrors the opposite hand.


During the embryonic development the neurons that are supposed to be responsible for releasing the gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Fails to migrate into the hypothalamus.


Hormone replacement therapy. Testosterone for males and estrogen in women. Also reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
