Meet Melchizedek

I am Melchizedek,
High Priest of El Elyon,
the Most High God.

I am a mysterious figure who appears to Abraham and his family in Genesis Chapter 14.  It is after a battle and Abraham is praising God for his success in defeating enemies.

I bring an offering of bread and wine which I bless and share with Abraham.  I also bless Abraham.  He is so moved by this experience that he decides to tithe by offering ten percent of his goods to God.

You hear about me in a number of places in the Bible - both the Old and New Testaments.  I am similar to Abel as both of us are early figures who give an offering to God.  Here you'll see me, Abel (left) and Abraham and Isaac (right)

One place in the Old Testament is in Psalm 110.  Verse 4 says: "The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek'"

I am mentioned eight times in the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews. In Chapter 7, the author of this letter compares Christ to me .  The author references Psalm 110 and says: "'The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind,  you are a priest forever' - accordingly Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant" (Heb. 7:21-22)

Here's a diagram which explains the link between me and Christ
