Catcher in th Rye Reading Log

Chapters 1 & 2

"I was sixteen then, and I'm seventeen now, and sometimes I act like I'm about thirteen. It's really ironical, because because I'm six foot two and a half and I have gray hair" (J.D. Salinger 9).

Chapters 3 & 4

"[Ackley] took another look at my hat...'Up home we wear a hat like that to shoot dear in, for Chrissake,' he said. 'That's a deer shooting hat.' 'Like hell it is.' I took it off and looked at it. I sort of closed one eye, like I was taking aim at it. 'This is a people shooting hat,' I said. 'I shoot people in this hat'" (Salinger 22).

This quote is showing the theme of the journey from innocence to awareness. It shows this because Holden is searching for his independence from his parents and forming into what society wants him to be.

Chapter 5 & 6

Holden rarely goes to Ackley's room because it has this acrid order to it.

Holden is not an indulgent person, resulting in him getting a bloody nose from Stradlater.

Holden says that the only way to smoke in the dorm is to do it nocturnally.

Stradlater had to quell Holden to the ground when he hit him.

Holden was able to ruminate all the memories of his little brother from just looking at his old baseball mit.
