Identifying Similarity

For two shapes to be similar they have to be related in appearance. They are alike, but are not identical.


Since the orientation of the figures is the same, one of the transformations is a translation.

To find out if two shapes are similar, write ratios comparing the lengths of each side. For example, you could compare

Since the ratios are equal,

  • Ratio~A relationship between two quantities.
  • Identical~Similar in every detail; exactly alike.
  • Alike Shapes~Shapes that have alike sides or angles.
  • Angles~The amount of turn between two straight lines that have a common end point.
