## Identifying Similarity

For two shapes to be similar they have to be related in appearance. They are alike, but are not identical.

__Example~__

Since the orientation of the figures is the same, one of the transformations is a translation.

To find out if two shapes are similar, write ratios comparing the lengths of each side. For example, you could compare

Since the ratios are equal,

- Ratio~A relationship between two quantities.
- Identical~Similar in every detail; exactly alike.

- Alike Shapes~Shapes that have alike sides or angles.
- Angles~The amount of turn between two straight lines that have a common end point.
