Harry Potter Spell Book Challenge

J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter Series, studies Latin in college.  She draws on her knowledge of Latin root words when she creates words and sometimes names in her books.

Lord Voldemort is an example.  Vol means flight and mort means death.  So, the name Voldemort means flight of death.  If you have read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies, you know that this name makes perfect sense for the evil Lord Voldemort's character.

Spell Book Challenge

Now it's time to teach the class.  Working with your group you are going to create a "spell book lesson" on Google Slides.  You group needs to find ten spells that were not defined in the first video.  Not sure what spells to use?  Look through these sites:

http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Spells_...

http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2013/07/spells-...

http://harrypotterfanzone.com/word-origins/

Once you have selected 10 spells, create a Google Slide show.  Each word should be featured on a slide of its own.  Tell what the spell does, what the root is and what it means, and include a picture that helps us understand.

Each group will present their spells to the class.
