Great Ideas!

Advocating for the Learning Commons

Create a Virtual Space

  • promote library programs with a variety of multimedia such as slideshows, photographs to show what is going on in the space
  • link it to the school's website
  • be a portal to online resources and tools such as the library catalogue, databases (i.e. PebbleGo), video services (i.e. Discovery Education) and Web 2.0 services (i.e. Haiku Deck, Easy Bib)
  • include effective research tools and search engines
  • an excellent example of this is a Learning Commons Website from Kaechele Elementary Learning Commons

School Community Involvement

  • invite parents to volunteer
  • extend library hours after school once a week to allow parents/caregivers to visit the school library with their children
  • attend parent council meetings to give updates about what is happening in the Learning Commons

Displaying Projects

  • create a space to display student work
  • rotate the display among classes

Lead Workshops to Teach New Technologies

  • invite staff and students to the Learning Commons to learn about Web 2.0 tools and programs on the computer image
  • train students to support fellow students on the use of new technologies and devices by establishing a tech team

Book Clubs

  • promote a love of reading and discussion
  • giving student choice
