Touching Spirit Bear

A young offender, Cole Mathews, is sent to an island in Alaska to live in isolation for a year after beating up Peter Driscal, where an encounter with a spirit bear changes his entire view on life and he begins a journey of self healing.

The main setting in the novels are Minneapolis and Island in South East Alaska. The Island is where Cole learned how to self heal and forgive and let go of his anger.

Ben Mikalsen was born on December 8,1952 original from Bolivian. He started to write full-time in 1984. Some of the books he wrote was Touching Spirit Bear, Ghost of Spirit Bear, Tree Girl and Petey. He won many awards such as International Reading Choice Awards and Western Writers Golden Spur award. Ben got a male black bear, Buffy, when he was 36 years old. Buffy was 26 years old until his death on September 1, 2010. He wrote books for 26 years.

Cole Matthew is the main character of the novel. He is a delinquent with family problems. He smashed Peter Driscals skull into the side walk, after Peter was not the same physical and mentally . Garvey is Coles patrol office, who helped him get into the circle justice. Edwin is Tlingit elder who also helped guide Cole into his journey of self healing.

The main theme of the novel is self healing. Because of Cole's offence, everyone including Cole had suffered because of his crime. They all learned to self heal in the end of the novel. The minor theme Child abuse. Even though he got abused by his father and his father also got abused as child. They only mentioned child abused 3-4 times.

We rate this novel 3/5 stars, even though the story hold powerful meaning about forgiving and having self control the novel was very slow and we would have wanted to read more about Coles family history and some romances.
