  • In the early 500B.C. a new way of government was invented in Athens. It was democracy or rule by the peoples. Only a male citizens had to say how the city was run.Not everyone had to vote though women, slaves and foreigners cannot be a citizens. For the 30,000 citizens there was a 500 member ruling council. Citizens choose this council for a year at a time. Citizens met to vote on a new law put forward by the council.Citizens also vote to get rid of politicians they did not like. They write the name of the person they hate on a piece of broken pottery called an Ostrakan. Any politician who get 600 votes was banished from the city for 10 years
