Traditional Japenese poem

Haiku usually is based on nature but new poets are starting to take on new subjects for their haikus. Haiku is on a syllable base. The meter is 5-7-5, so it is often hard to get just the right words and add the syllables. A  kireji is some times used on the end of one of the three lines. Kireji means cutting word. Many times when a haiku is translated to English the syllables get mixed up so the haiku in English isn't actually a haiku it is then a free verse.

Awake at night

Awake at night--
the sound of the water jar
cracking in the cold.
