The Experience

My friend and I visited the Dallas Museum of Art and we toured through the Ancient American Art collection. It was cool because since we were currently doing the group projects about different ethnic groups, we got to learn things about them that we didn't already know prior to our research. I always enjoy going to the museum because I get to learn about different cultures and study how they differ and if there are similarities of their normal life styles to mine. I think it's cool that we have museums all over the world because without them, history would go forgotten. When walking through the museum I thought about how one day in the far future people might be walking through a museum learning about things from my culture today and it made me appreciate the life I follow today.

What I learned about the language and culture

When touring the museum I learned about the Maya's, Olmecs, Teotihuacan, and West Mexico. I got to learn about their different cultures and that helped me get a better understanding of different ancient groups before we presented the ethnic group presentations in class. I noticed a lot of the art featured in the Ancient American collection was in the form of pottery and sculptures, so I figured that must be what they normally made in the form of art long ago. The architecture seen in West Mexico was partially influenced by the Olmec's and because some people traveled, different things assimilated into other groups. When learning about their culture, it made me wonder what it would be like to experience a day in the life of an Ancient American and how it would compare to life today. I also learned to appreciate the different cultures of the world because without them, the world would probably be completely different.

What to take away

When I was at the museum I got to tour the Ancient American collection and through it, I was able to learn about different groups of people that helped make our world how it is today. I wonder what a person who might be descended from one of the ancient groups would think if they toured the museum and if they would be familiar with what they saw and learned about. I was able to appreciate all the different groups that I learned about and think about how they compare to life today.

The Experience

I listened to the podcast No Place like Home on The American Life and it was about immigration to the United States from Mexico as well as immigration from the United States to Mexico. I learned how people felt when the moved from the United States to Mexico and how they would feel homesick working at call centers in Mexico. When they got calls and talk to people from the United States, just a person mentioning a fast food restaurant could make them miss their home. It was my first podcast to listen to and I really enjoyed getting to learn about peoples thoughts on crossing the border and how they feel. I also got an understanding of how people feel with their pride to the state or country they live in because when their state song is changed to fit another state, they might not feel as important. Learning about the activity people do to experience what it might be like to cross the border gave me a better understanding of how scary it could be and all the tough things people do in order to cross into the US.

What I learned about the language and culture

I got a sense of why people might want to cross the border and enter the United States and why people might want to stay in Mexico. Most middle class to upper class people tend to stay in Mexico without any intention to cross the border because they are doing well in terms of money and work whereas as people who are lower class will attempt to cross the border in order to look for better opportunities for themselves. However I don't think people who try to cross the border think everything through. One can't expect to immediately find work in the Unites States and have everything work out. I think that they look at the US as being perfect and solving all problems, giving them a false image.

What to take away

Listening to the podcast made me appreciate living in the United States and having all of the opportunities that I do. It made me think of all the people that don't have as much as some people and think of what they might be going through. I do think though that if the people took pride in their own country, then they would be more inclined to look for a job without moving countries. Since there are people in the United States moving to Mexico for jobs, then people actually from Mexico should be able to find work.

The Experience

I watched the movie "Bordertown" and it was about the issues with women who work on the border in the city of Juarez, Mexico and the problems that arise with the fact that they have no protection. The women leave work late and because it's so dark, many are raped and murdered with their crimes left unsolved by the police. It was really hard to watch the movie knowing that things like that happen in Mexico and other countries. Even in the United States crimes happen that are unsolved, but I think that it would be more common to see people eager to solve a crime in the United States with the advanced protection of the police and other types of security. When watching the movie it made me very appreciative of the fact that I can live in the United States and that if I get a job, that I can drive my car to it without the possibility of more danger happening that comes about by walking.

What I learned about the language and culture

Since I've never been to Mexico before, watching this movie allowed me to see some of the problems that are happening in the country. I learned what it might be like to live in the country and how there is the threat of danger right when you cross the United States border. Many of the women are too frightened to do anything about the crimes and I think that if they started to become more brave then they could be able to get more people everywhere to follow their example in an effort to end these crimes. I learned that many people do whatever they can in order to protect themselves even if justice isn't served and that fleeing to the United States might seem like a good idea, however it doesn't erase the problems a person has which immigrants might think will happen

What to take away

I think that this movie should get people to open their eyes and see these real issues that are happening to women in other countries because the world should be trying to stop the crime rate from going up. I think it's important that people like the main character Lauren exist because they are here to tell of the brutal stories in order to try and find a solution to get these awful things stopped as well as to give these women and their families a voice. If more people take notice and spread awareness, then people would be making a difference and I think it would bring more peace to the world as well as bring more countries and their cultures together.

Cuales son las 2 cosas mas intersantes/importantes que aprendiste del idioma/ la cultura durante este ano con Comunidades?

Before Comunidades I never really immersed myself with the Spanish culture and so I never learned anything about it or cared enough to. I didn't really realize that it is actually pretty easy to learn about the culture even though I live in Dallas. When I visit a Spanish restaurant I have the ability to ask questions to the people who work there in Spanish and I know that they appreciate people speaking in Spanish towards them and trying to communicate. Through Comunidades I now know that I am able to go out and learn things about the culture and language and use it to my ability. I learned that all around the world and our country, you see the Spanish language and culture everywhere and there are probably people even on my street who speak the language. Over time, more and more people are starting to immigrate into the United States who are apart of the Spanish culture so I learned that it's important to learn about the culture in order to learn about the people that live around me.
