How It Can Affect You
Codeine and a Few Facts
Codeine is also known as Cody, Captain Cody, and Schoolboy. It is used to treat mild to moderate pain and to relieve cough. It is found in cough syrup and over the counter medicines like Tylenol. The intended effects of codeine are pain relief and or cough suppression.
Nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting are short term effects on the body if people were to abuse this drug. Some long term effects include mental health problems, mild to severe debilitating, depression, disorientation, and respiratory depression is the most common of all the side effects. Of course, these are only a few of the side effects that could potentially occur.
The chemical formula for codeine is C18H21NO3. The structural formula is seen below.
There are two types of treatment; hospitalization and rehabilitation centers. Hospitalization does something called a medical detoxification which helps completely rid your body of the codeine. The medical staff helps the patient through the withdrawals. Rehabilitation centers help you cope with addiction to codeine through in patient and out patient programs. Some of these treatments include psychiatric treatments.
I think that people who abuse codeine have problems with themselves. They try to find a way to cope with another problem. It is definitely not worth the destruction of the body that it causes. All of the short term and long term affects are not worth it for sure. It could even cause mental problems! No. Definitely not worth it. There are some treatments for this abuse though, which seem to be helpful.
