Nelson Mandela: Fighting For Freedom

Publisher Information

Hi, I'm Ashley Powers a Holman Middle School student working on a project in my English class. Here I'm going to tell you about Nelson Mandela and some important things that he did. The reason why I chose Nelson Mandela is because I heard about him on the nightly news and on t.v. shows. I thought since I don't a lot about him I am going to research him in the next project I get. Thank you and enjoy!

He was a leader in the struggle against apartheid—South Africa’s official system of segregation and discrimination against the country’s non-white majority.

Childhood

Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in Mvezo, Transkei, on July 18th 1918.His mother was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and his father Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela was the main advisor of the Acting King of the Thembu people, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. He received the name ‘Nelson’ on his first day in primary school from his teacher Miss Mdingane. When he was 12 his father died and he was raised by the Regent at the Great Place in.

Career Choices and Apartheid

Nelson Mandela joined a student protest group in high school years, about two weeks later the program got shut down. The students got sent to prison for fighting for what was right. He later realized that his career was to stop apartheid. He would not stop until their was no more apartheid in South Africa. Before that, his first job was in 1941 as a security guard on a gold mine and then as a legal clerk in the law firm Witkin Edelman and Sidelsky. Later, he started to study about apartheid and South Africa right to learn how to stop apartheid. He spent 27 years in prison to prove the white majority wrong.

The Movement

Mandela started a movement and grew bigger and bigger as time went on. Once he was sent to prison, the movement grew stronger and gained more and more followers. The movement didn't care what anyone else said they just wanted Nelson to be free. After a long time, Nelson was finally free. The movement didn't brake apart, they stuck together to face the next big problem.

To me, it seems ironic that he was a security guard, and yet, it makes total sense.
