More than two-thirds of adults are considered to be over weight or obese. More than one-third of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 have extreme obesity. Almost 3 in 4 men are considered to be overweight or obese.Obesity as become one of the biggest killers of people in today's society and it is only getting worse. In the documentary Super-size me, director Morgan Spurlock conducts a 30 day experiment, eating only McDonald's food to see how it affects someone's physical and emotional state. The issue is presented through various techniques to show the audience how obesity is affecting contemporary society.
One of those techniques used was setting. Seeing as the documentary is based around the franchise McDonald's its obvious that majority of the documentary was going to be filmed around and in McDonald's restaurants. That's why the setting of documentary really presents the issue of obesity. We see that because of the numerous people walking in and out of McDonald's and there physical appearance being obese or overweight. The setting also presents the issue because not only are there lots of people buying McDonald's food but there are lots of McDonald's everywhere. This vast availability of fast food entices more people to buy McDonald's food because it might be more convenient and cheaper. This supports the fact that there are more McDonald's restaurants in America than anywhere else in the world. Thus far making America the fattest and most obese country on the planet.
Another technique used is juxtaposition. This technique presents the issue of obesity in contemporary society because though out the entire documentary scenes and images are shown and created to have a dramatic impact on the audience and to show to effects of fast food on the human body. The scenes and images were of very overweight or obese people while Morgan Spurlock was narrating about the statistics of obesity and McDonald's. There were also a scenes were they showed how not only was obesity affecting adults but also affecting children as well. This presents the issue of obesity in contemporary society because even now children are exposed to effects of fast food and how it affect themselves physical and emotional and that's not healthy for a child at such a young age.
