Dragonflies are located in the Northern United States. They live in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. You will find dragonflies most likely by ponds, lakes, canals, streams, rivers or swamps. During their larva stage, dragonflies are in water.
A typical adult dragonfly, is about the length of your pinky. The dragonfly has two pairs of transparent wings. They also have an abdomen. They have a wingspan up to 16 cm. in length. They have two large multi shaped eyes like a fly.
When a dragonfly is a baby it will eat bloodworms. Bigger baby dragonflies will eat small fish. The adult dragonfly eats midges, mosquitoes, butterflies, moths, and smaller dragonflies.
You may be thinking, how could something as little as a dragonfly be important to us? We are at the top of the food chain. Dragonflies help control the population of harmful bugs, like mosquitoes. In other words, they eat the bugs that bite us, and nobody likes bug bites.
Dragonflies grow up so fast and they get their wings really quickly that they could start their life in a rain puddle. These amazing flying creatures can fly up to 19-38 mph. Dragonflies have been on Earth for over 300 million years. When a dragonfly flies it moves its wings like rowboat oars paddling.
