The key to understanding technology

Digital Literacy

Digital literacy allows people to teach and learn various amounts of techniques and opportunities that technology has to offer, which also allows them to apply it to their everyday life lives. Parents, please make sure your children familiarize themselves with their computers. Make sure they properly know how to use it, whether its understanding the use of a keyboard, or knowing how to keep a computer in good condition. It's also important to make sure your children understand the availability of the different search engines that are offered to them. For example, look at the benefits for using Google, and then look at its weakness. Also, make sure your children practice good researching techniques. For example, when searching for something online don't put a question or a sentence. Keep your searches simple and concise, and use key words or symbols to find your answers. Lastly, make sure your children know how to depict whether a website is reliable or not. Some ideas to keep in mind with that: Does the website have an author or publisher, or when was it last updated?

Digital Access

Digital access is the full availability of the internet, which has drastically improved throughout our society. Parents need to make sure that their children understand the positive and negative effects of the internet, whether it's cultural, environmental, political, ethical, social, or even economical. It's also important to teach your children how the internet was first created because it allows them to understand how the internet evolved and improved throughout each passing year. Don't just look at the internet in general, but actually look at the development of email, emoticons, social networking sites, and even urls. Also, take the time to teach them about digital divide and what it actually means, as well as how it impacts our world locally and internationally. Lastly, take the time to analyze the significance of technology and how it's leading to future possibilities such as the creation of Watson.

Digital Health and Wellness

Digital health and wellness is what allows a person to be aware of how the use of technology can effect our everyday lifestyles, such as behavior, attitudes, and posture. It's important to teach your children how the overuse of technology can lead to internet addiction. Have your children take a quiz or survey that will allow them to see how much time they spend on the internet. Make sure you take the time to go over the various consequences that may occur with the overuse of technology, such as developing bad posture or even straining your eye sight. It's important to realize that technology can not only affect us physically but also mentally. Too much internet can cause people to go through an emotional change, but it can also cause them to lack their own personal knowledge as well.

Digital Law

Digital law is being able to understand the different terms and responsibilities needed in order to properly use the internet. Parents please make sure your children understand copyright laws, and why they are important to the digital world today. For instance, take the time to look into the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and what is the purpose of it. Make sure they know the four factors of fair use, and what each of them mean. It's very important to know the three kinds of laws used to protect creative content, as well as knowing what each of them protect. Also, do not hesitate to look into the specific consequences of criminal copyright infringement. Lastly, I encourage parents to teach their children about the benefits of registering a copyright, and knowing where you can specifically do this.

Digital security is the process of using electronic protection in order to ensure our online safety. This is definitely an important section for parents to go over with their children. For instance, go over the characteristics of what makes up a strong password versus what makes up a weak password. Keep in mind that a strong password contains 8 or more characters, no personal information, and it's combined with letters, numbers and symbols. Also, look into the differences between digital footprint and digital image. Know that digital footprint refers to the online presence that people create when visiting different websites. While digital image is a basic electronic snapshot that can be seen or found any where in the internet. Next, make sure your children understand what it means to have their identity stolen, and how it happens online. For instance, phishing, pretexting, and skimming are some examples of how your identity can be stolen. Lastly, look into the factors and characteristics of what makes new technology unsafe.

Digital commerce is the process of buying and sell products electronically. I highly encourage parents to teach their children how to protect their identity when shopping online. Some things to keep in mind when shopping online is making sure you know where you are buying from, making sure the websites are encrypted, and making sure you review your bills and purchases. Also, take the time to teach your children the characteristics of writing a good review. For example, list side effects of the product, mention what the product is supposed to do, and also your reason for buying the product. Make sure to be very concise when writing a review. Lastly, make sure your children know how to evaluate a review, especially if it's on something they like.

Digital communication is a form of exchanging information through any use of technology. Parents please make sure your children understand how the internet effects a person's ability to maintain a relationship through the use of social networking sites. It is also important to know how the internet has caused majority of us to lose connection with the outside world. For instance, people communicate more online rather than in a face-to-face conversation. In fact, it's important to go over how social networking sites impact our society in general. Also, I highly encourage parents to teach their children about the Dunbar theory, and how he explains that the maximum number of friends a person can handle online is 150. Digital communication has completely evolved over the past couple years, and it's essential for people to understand why and how.
