Prince Henry 'The Navigator'
Prince Henry, the Duke of Viseu, was born on March 4th of 1394 in Portugal. He was the third son of King John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster. He was first inspired to navigate voyages when his father took him and his brothers on a trip to command a military force against the Muslims. When Prince Henry was 21, he was visited by someone who told him that he would serve the lord by discovering the Ethiopians who would have great amounts of gold for his country. After that visit, Prince Henry began to sponsor voyages to Africa. He died at Vila do Infante on November 13, 1460. He has been credited for his school of navigation where students could learn basic map making skills and other scientific skills.
