The Peacemakers is a great organization that helps out the community of South Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It strengthens and empowers the community in many different ways. Some programs that they have are Addiction Recovery, Basketball Courts, The Bike Shop, Career Readiness Training, Case Management Services, Computer Lab, Freedom School, Food Distribution, GED Classes, Other Seminars and Courses, The Locker Room, and The Well.
The Peacemakers have a group called Freedom to Change that is a weekly Christian support group for those who are struggling and want to find freedom.
Peacemakers Family Center offers several outdoor basketball courts for neighborhood recreation.
The Bike Shop
On the first Saturday of each month, the Bike Shop is open at Peacemakers Family Center. They offer free bike repair to neighborhood kids, and train kids to be able to repair their own bikes. Kids without bikes can "earn" a donated bike by completing 50 hours of community service at Peacemakers.
Career Readiness Training
Peacemakers Family Center, in partnership with Nash Community College, offers classes designed to prepare individuals to take the Career Readiness Certification exams. This certification is being required by a growing number of local and regional employers.
Case Management Services
Peacemakers Family Center works with residents of the South Rocky Mount Community on a one-on-one basis to offer life coaching, assist with job training and placement, help with personal and family budgeting, connect with community resources related to housing and other physical needs, assist with mental health issues, and provide spiritual counseling and encouragement. The goal of their Case Management Services is to empower their clients with the knowledge and skills necessary to live successful and sustainable lives.
The computer lab at Peacemakers Family Center is a free access facility for the South Rocky Mount Community. This 14-computer, Windows-based lab features internet access, educational software, and adult and teen training classes.
The Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program provides an eight-week (full-time) summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.
Peacemakers Family Center operates a food pantry that currently serves over 400 households per month. They receive donations from local grocery stores, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, and individuals.
Peacemakers Family Center is pleased to partner with Nash Community College to offer FREE GED preparation classes on Monday nights, 5:30pm – 8:00pm at Peacemakers. The classes are open enrollment, meaning you can begin at any time, and you can register at the time of the class.
Other Seminars & Courses
Peacemakers Family Center routinely sponsors seminars and short courses that are intended to empower our neighbors. Past seminars/classes have included “Strengthening Families”, Money Management, Interviewing Skills, Resume Writing, Landing Your Dream Job, and Parenting Children Who Have Experienced Trauma.
The Locker Room
The Locker Room is a weekly gathering of men where they come together to support each other in their roles as fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, businessmen, and friends. They share their challenges and problem-solve life together, believing that it is through a relationship with Jesus Christ that we become all we were created to be.
The Well (Women Encouraging, Learning, Living) is a small group in which women come together to support and encourage each other through Bible study, prayer, and fellowship.
