This unit delves into the historical context of photography at the turn of the century in Europe and the United States. The content traces the tension that existed between art and amateur photographers at the end of the nineteenth century and the emergence of the pictorialist style that emerged soon after.
By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
- Identify the historical context in which the pictorialist style emerged.
- Identify key European and American photographers associated with pictorialism and note significant achievements of each.
- Identify the visual characteristics of the pictorialist style and major techniques and processes used.
- Discuss the role that Alfred Stieglitz played in the Photo Secession and the significance of his publication, Camera Work.
