iOS Apps for Mobile Learning

Module 9: Personal Mobile Learning

Below I have provided a handful of apps that could be utilized for mobile learning in the classroom. These apps can be used by both students and teachers to promote engaged and interactive learning in the classroom and at home.

EarthViewer


What is it?

EarthViewer is an app that allows for an interactive view of the earth up to 4.5 billion years ago. It gives you the chance the look through the several locations in different time periods. It allows for the exploration of earths history, and provides in-depth explanations of major geological and biological events in history. A further explanation can be found here.

How can it be used in the classroom?

EarthViewer is a revolutionary tool that allows students to go back up to 4.5 billion years in earths history. It is a tool that can be used in both science and social studies classes to study the history of earths biological and geological events. This app also provides information on how to integrate it into the classroom, as well as tutorials on how to use the app. It can be used to complete homework assignments that focus on different time periods in history for a social studies class, such as the period of the Inca Empire. It also provides a world temperature map for the last 100 years, which can be used to create an assignment for a science class. Students can use the app in  class and outside of class because it's free to download onto their personal mobile devices!

SkyORB

What is it?

SkyORB is an astronomy app that includes 3D star and planetary maps. It also has a feature that allows for you to identify stars and planets just by pointing  your mobile device to the sky. An explanation of SkyORB and its features can be found here.

How can it be used in the classroom?

SkyORB can be used in the classroom for homework or projects assigned to students. It is the ideal app for a science class that is learning about the solar system. This app is also free, so every student can download it onto their mobile device! This is a great app for the classroom, whether your class is studying moon phases or constellations, it allows for increased student engagement in the lesson, as well as interaction on their mobile devices.

See.Touch.Learn

What is it?

See.Touch.Learn is an app that provides teachers with the tools to create digital flash cards for students. It is a picture card learning system that is ideal for visual learners. It allows for the assessment of learners in an easy, fun way! A further explanation of the app feature can be found here.

How can it be used in the classroom?

This app is ideal for students who are visual learners. It can also be used for students with special needs and autism because it provides them with focus, creativity, and visual learning in a way that allows them to be assessed on their learning. See.Touch.Learn also includes over 2,200 lessons that can be accessed in the app. It allows for teachers to create personalized lessons in regards to content and grade level. It can also be used a study tool by students who enjoy using the flashcard method of studying!

3D Brain

What is it?

3D Brain is an app that allows students to discover different areas of the brain. This app provides an interactive and engaged way to explore different areas of the brain, with 29 interactive features.  It is a virtual, 3D brain that can be rotated and explored. How can it be used in the classroom?

3D brain is a great app to use in a science class because it provides 29 interactive features. Along with these features, students can also explore how the brain functions, what happens when the brain is injured, and what contributes to mental illnesses. This app would beneficial for teachers to use in classroom lectures. It is also a great app for students to use in the classroom and at home for projects, homework, and assignments. Not only does this app provide interactive features for the students to use for their learning, but it also provides links to recent research being done. This only advances the students learning and engagement.

History Calendar

What is it?

History Calendar is an app that provides you with historical events that happened today or any other day. The history browser allows for you to search specific historical events, and provides you with articles relating to that event. It is a great app to utilize in a social studies class! How can it be used in the classroom?

History Calendar is a great app to use in a social studies classroom, for both students and teachers. Students can use this app to access information about historical events being studied in class. It gives students access to several articles pertaining to historical events, and this is very helpful for homework, assignments, projects, and studying. Teachers can also use this app to find articles that pertain to the content being taught in their classroom, and it is a great app to use when looking for resources and information to use in the classroom.

iBrainstorm

What is it?

The iBrainstorm app provides a blank canvas for students to brainstorm. It allows for creativity and creation, while doubling as great study tool for students. How can it be used in the classroom?

iBrainstorm can be used in many ways in the classroom. It can be used by students to brainstorm for study notes, projects, or assignments. It would also be great for students who are writing essays because it provides a way to organize their ideas and notes on one, simplified canvas. It can also be used for group projects because students can share their brainstormed information with each other. This app could also be used by teachers to brainstorm resources and activities for their classroom.
