Retweet, Favorite, Donate: Charitable Giving On Twitter Might Soon Be A Click Away
The Twittersphere may soon be getting a little more giving.
Twitter announced on its blog Monday that the social media site is testing a new "buy" button that can be seen on some accounts made available to a small portion of U.S. users. The feature allows users to purchase specific products related to tweets directly from their news feeds.
While the majority of the participating accounts listed on the blog are run by businesses or musicians, the Associated Press reported that users can also donate to charitable organizations such as Donors Choose, The Nature Conservancy, 9/11 Day and GLAAD.
Twitter, which called the move an "early step" and hopes to expand the function to more brands and nonprofits, assured users that online security is a crucial element to the new endeavor.
"We built this test experience with your trust and security at the forefront," the blog post reads. "Your credit card is processed securely and won’t be shared with the seller without your permission."
Twitter is the second social media giant to test a feature that allows users to quickly donate to nonprofits from their own personal accounts. In December of last year, Facebook announced a "donate" button would be available for 19 well-known charitable organizations, including UNICEF, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Water.org.
