What is homelessness?

A person who is homeless, is one who is living on the streets or does not have a home for themselves.

According to Students Against Hunger website, "just last year, the national poverty rate rose to include 13.2% of the population. 1 in 7 people were at risk of suffering from hunger in the United States. In addition, 3.5 million people were forced to sleep in parks, under bridges, in shelter or cars."[1]

On a single night in January 2013, 610,042 people were experiencing homelessness. From 2012 to 2013, a period of continued slow recovery from the Great Recession, overall homelessness decreased by 3.7 percent and homelessness decreased among every major subpopulation—families (7 percent), chronically homeless individuals (7.3 percent), and veterans (7.3 percent).

Child Homelessness

Over the years there has been a dramatic increase of children that are homeless. According to the U.S Department of Education, there is a homeless child in every county, in every state, across the nation.

Between 2012 and 2013, the number of homeless children increased in 31 states.

Causes of Homelessness

There are many causes of homelessness.The majority of homeless people have been put into homelessness due to life altering events such as a loss of a loved one. Homelessness is, in fact, caused by tragic life occurrences not only the loss of loved ones but also, job loss, domestic violence, divorce and other family issues. Other impairments such as depression, untreated mental illness, PTSD, and disabilities are also responsible for a large portion of the homeless.

There are emergency shelters are for families whose life has been altered by tragic occurrences.
