The Cold War
The cold war started right after World War ll in 1945. It last till 1990-1991. It was fought by Eastern Europe and the West. The west was lead by the United States of America and Eastern Europe was lead by the Soviet Union and Russia.
The way the two armies fought was trying to show off their scientific powers. There was two kind of ways they used there science powers was the space race and the arms race. The other way they fought was through proxy wars. A few examples of proxy wars are: the Vietnam War, the Korean War, and the Soviet Afghanistan War. These wars were based on a scientific power from each of the two sides.
The Space Race
Have you ever wondered when NASA was created? Have you ever wondered why? NASA was created in 1958. The reason why is the space race. In 1957, the Soviet Union launched an "enemy satellite" named Sputnik. This was the first satellite. Of course now the americans were embarrassed. It was even worse when the Soviet Union had, Yuri Gagarin, be the first man to orbit the earth. Now, it was the race to the moon. The Apollo moon program was launched in 1961 and lasted till 1975 by the United States. On July 16, 1969 the Apollo 11 was launched. The trip to the moon took the total of three days. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to step on to the moon. His famous words still stand. ''That's one small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind.''
