Article 1- The Dictatorship of Relativism (Pope Benedict XVI)
"That is why the humility to recognize the truth and to accept it as a standard has to be relearned and practiced again."
"Jesus professes that he himself is The Truth and the witness to the truth. He does not defend the truth with legions but rather makes it visible through his Passion and thereby also implements it."
"Speak softly and carry a big stick."
Todays society is full of people who question others yet never think to question themselves. People become so caught up in the fact that they are correct, that they fail to observe if what they are saying is actually the truth. As they pursue this attempt to prove themselves, they become caught up in a lie. The world is currently stuck in a lie and only a slim amount of people are able to humble themselves and observe the real truth. It is ok to admit you are wrong. By doing so you are qualifying what is right and opening your mind to broader horizons that ultimately strengthen your character and knowledge. If always correct someone who lacks that ability to be humble will accumulate pride in themselves and in their work. Christ set a clear example of how to lead by example. He stated he was the Truth but never boasted or bragged of being the Son of God. He came humbly to reveal the truth in order to set us free and that truth was him. Todays society needs to be able to humble themselves and lower there standards of pride, ultimately making them a better person.
“We must have the courage to dare to say: Yes, man must seek the truth; he is capable of truth.”
The writer discusses how society skews the concept of the truth to make it relative. Society conducts what is known as negative tolerance, by trying to liberate society from religion and installing tolerance by lack of religion. The Church teaches, and so does much of western philosophy, that truth is attainable. There is now a war between Christianity and secularism. We can attain truth if we choose to seek it, rather than settling for our own feeble concepts of reality.
Article 2- Part three Life in Christ
The Old Testament attests that God is the source of all truth. His Word is truth. His Law is truth. His "faithfulness endures to all generations."255 Since God is "true," the members of his people are called to live in the truth.256
"Men could not live with one another if there were not mutual confidence that they were being truthful to one another."263 The virtue of truth gives another his just due. Truthfulness keeps to the just mean between what ought to be expressed and what ought to be kept secret: it entails honesty and discretion. In justice, "as a matter of honor, one man owes it to another to manifest the truth."264
Christ is the truth. Christ has revealed to us through his works and his life what the truth is by demonstrating to us who he is and setting an example for how we should live. It is the duty of a Christian to live a life in truth meaning in Christ, and to reveal the truth to others and speak the truth. In order to develop a healthy relationship with anyone there must be trust. In order to obtain the trust of another one must become trustworthy. Social media puts out false truths on how happiness can be manifested. It is the duty of a Christian to condemn that truth and reveal to the world the actually truth. It is our duty to trust in God and reveal to the world what is true and set the world on fire with Christ's love.
“Moral judgment must condemn the plague of totalitarian states which systematically falsify the truth.”
Truth is sacred. Those responsible for transferring the truth onto other individuals bear a great responsibility, for falsification is against God. No one is bound to divulge certain truths to those who have no need to hear it. For example, the seal of confession protects the penitent from confessors divulging their sins.Things such as the media play a huge role on the formation of culture and information sharing, and so those who serve in influential positions must not use it to advance their own interests. People in this position must serve the common good.Sacred art is meant to enhance understanding of the truth through visible signs. It is very good when it leads man to glorify God. Thus, sacred art is to be promoted.
