Background and Overview:
Shanghai is one of the largest and most populous cities in China, with a resident population of 23,019,148. It is an economical and cultural hub that plays an extremely vital role in shaping China’s future. Geographically, it is situated on the Huangpu river, hence the name Shanghai (上海), which directly translates to “on the sea”. Before western colonization, Shanghai was a prosperous port town that gained most of its income from fishing, textiles and trade.
Some argue that Shanghai only gained its true cultural identity after the signing of the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, when it was open to foreign powers.
