Thomas Jefferson was one of the founding fathers of the America we know today. Jefferson was the author of The Declaration of Independence, writing the famous line, "All men are created equal."
Jefferson owned around 200 slaves. This is the opposite of what his political beliefs were though as Jefferson states, "All men are created equal." These words were very improtant to the charachters in the book "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It made Curzon and others think that they could gain freedom if they fought for freedom. They thought if America won the war that they would be free. Sadly Jefferson wasn't true to his words. Even when America won the war the slaves were not freed.
