Fort Wagner's first battle was on July 11,1863. Only 12 soldiers were killed. The second battle that happened a week later was the Unions attack, July 18, 1863. It was led by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, first that was made up of black soldiers.  The two battles were located on Morris Island, South Carolina it covered the Charleston Harbor. There was 2 battles there, the American Civil War battles known as the Operations Against the Defenses of Charleston in 1863 considered as the toughest beachhead defenses. It was constructed by the Confederate States Army.  The battle had 14 cannons, largest was 10 inches. The area was 250 by 100 and spanned an area between Atlantic (east).
