Peter Sarpy

Introduction

Have you ever heard of Peter A. Sarpy? Well he was a busy man who worked hard to keep his business’s running. He lived from 1805 to1865. He was very helpful establishing the town of Bellevue. Because of his help, Sarpy County was named in his honor. Sarpy was a bold hard working man.

What Was His Early Life Like?

Peter A. Sarpy was born November 3,1805 in New Orleans. His family was French Creole. Sarpy was the second son of Gregoire Berold. Sarpy’s father was an early Missouri fur trader. He and his father were great fur traders. Sarpy’s father helped him learn more about fur trading so he would be a better trader. There is not a lot of information on Peter Sarpy’s early life.

What Was His Adult Life Like?

Sarpy Wanted to build a fur trade business, so he left his home in St. Louis to claim land. When he found land near present day Bellevue, Sarpy built his fur trade business. Traders used Sarpy’s business as a starting and stopping point for their trips. Sarpy moved back to St. Louis to build another trading post in Bellevue. After Sarpy moved to St. Louis, he married Nicomi the daughter of an Iowa chef. Peter Sarpy was involved in an illegal series of keelboat. In the 1850’s ferry business became a great hobby of Sarpy’s. Sarpy entered the trade in the south.

More On His Adult Life

People helped Sarpy get food , clothes, and other things for his trading post. Peter Sarpy helped gold miners get to the gold fields. In the mid 1830’s , Sarpy concentrated trading with the Native Americans. Peter A. Sarpy moved to Nebraska with his wife and died on January 4,1805. He was 59. In the same year, his brother John Sarpy died.

What Were Some Of His Accomplishments

Peter A. Sarpy has many accomplishments. Sarpy County is named after him. Sarpy’s fur trade business helped establish the city of Bellevue and post office’s in Bellevue. Because Sarpy was a leader in commerce and politics, his post was added to the National Register. In 1837, Peter Sarpy, along with 15 other men in 4 wagons built Fort Jackson

Conclusion

Sarpy and was a great man who was a leader in commerce and politics. So with that being said Sarpy County was named after him. Sarpy helped establish Bellevue and so some schools are named after him. Sarpy along with 15 other men built Fort Jackson. That is now a popular tourist site. Peter Sarpy’s accomplishments still live on today.
