"Never Shall I forget that Nocturnal Silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust."-Elie Wiesel

"Love gives us wings to soar above it all" -Sara Atzmon

Life in the Night

Crowded together on sidewalks

We waited and waited

Under a blistering sun we stood

Hoping it was all just a dream

But it wasn’t

Together we stood in damp cars

The rolling motion of the train ailing us

For days and days we rode on forever

A never-ending rail

A never-ending nightmare

Shoved to the outside world

The sun hit us like a blinding beam

Forming ranks we ran

“Men on the right, women on the left”

“Step lively, don’t fall behind”

But our families were behind

Yet we were still shoved forward

Days of bitter cold

Marching forever on

Our love ones had ceased to live

But no one dared to cry

The lash of the whip

The cry of the dying

The sound of a gun

Then silence

Finally they were finished

No more pain

Suffering was done

Freedom had come

Peace had arrived

But we had ceased to feel anything

We were dead and yet still living

The day had come to see my family

But what family

They had been taken

I had forgotten them

I had no one

I was no one

And yet I still can’t cry
