Deep Vein Thrombosis

By Collin Castillo and Kasey Rhodes

  1. Deep Vein Thrombosis is a blood clot in a deep vein. Most commonly, it is found in the leg.
  2. DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) is caused by a vein's inner lining being damaged which causes a blood clot. A blood clot is anything that restricts regular blood flow. This is usually a result of a person not moving for long periods of time such as after a surgery of accident.
  3. Common symptoms of DVT are pain in the leg, foot, or calf, swelling, and warm skin. Some people experience no symptoms.
  4. The doctor will first do a physical exam and depending on the test further testing may be required. These include ultrasounds, blood tests and venographs.
  5. Every 1 in 1,000 people in the adult population experience DVT. There are 200,000 to 3,000,000 cases per year.
  6. DVT can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle with lots of movement.
  7. Risk factors may include birth control pills, pregnancy, blood-clot disorders, being overweight or obese, smoking, cancer, age and lengthy bed rest. The more factors there are the greater the risk is. A complication is that DVT can cause the blood clot in your veins can break loose, then travel through your bloodstream and lodge in your lungs. This is referred to as a pulmonary embolism which is very serious.
  8. Medications for DVT typically include blood thinners and or clot-busters. Other treatments may be a blood filter inserted in a big vein such as the Vena Cava, or compression stockings.
