The Manifest Destiny:
The Manifest Destiny was the idea that it was a God given right to conquer western land.
Significance: The increased the American land and also help caused the Civil War.
North & South: they both loved the idea, but were worried who would control the new land.
The Reform Movement, was a social movement thats aim was to gradually change society. A Reform movement should not be confused with a revolutionary movement, which was radical or fundamental reforms.

An example of the reform:
Women's Rights: a reform to give women equal rights with men. i.e. Sojourner Truth
Temperance: an anti-alcohol movement i.e. Carrie Nation
Education: a reform to make education a mandatory thing, this reform was led by Horace Mann
Asylum: A reform that was led by Dorothea Dix, this reform was about how men who were crazy were not filled with sin, but rather insane.
The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850
The Fugitive Slave Law was a law set in place stating that Northern Officers had to recapture any free slaves that escaped to the North.
Significance: It gave slave owners the right to go into the north and bring back what they viewed as property (slaves).
North: they didn't mind this, but it bothered them seeing free blacks being stolen form their lives
South: they loved the idea of regaining property
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Significance: People say that it "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War". Abraham Lincoln said "So you're the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war." when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was an act that created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska.
Significance: It was a major contributor to the civil war. It ended the Missouri Compromise (36-30). Before this act, states were placed into the union in pairs, but after they were admitted one at a time and it was the states decision to be free or slave.
South: they were afraid that the north was going to gain political dominance
Dred Scott Decision
The Dred Scott Decision Was a court case affirming that slave owners can take their free slaves back into the Western Territories from where they had escaped.
Significance: It helped to encourage slavery which led to the brink of the Civil War.
south: they were happy that they could go reclaim property
Transcontinental Railroad was built in the 1860s, linking the well developed railway network of the Eastern coast with rapidly growing California.
Significance: it linked the southern states. it created a faster way to trade/ travel through the southern states
South: it made trade easier
