How To Stay Inspired To Be Fit For Life
As every professional tennis player knows, the key to winning tennis matches is mental toughness and the right attitude. This is why so many of the top tennis players, and other top athletes, hire sports psychologists! They quite literally have to "psyche" themselves up to win -- and that takes inspiration!
While practicing on the court, doing drills, and weight training are essential to winning tennis matches, tennis players don't win matches on a consistent basis unless they also concentrate on the mental aspect of the game. This is why you sometimes hear sports commentators talking among themselves about the "unrealized potential" a particular player has. In this conversation, they may talk about how a particular player has so much raw athletic talent but they still can't seem to win. After debating why this is, when it's all said and done, they usually come to the conclusion that it's a mental problem and/or "they just don't want it bad enough!"
You may be asking yourself at this point, "Why is MrFit talking about professional tennis?" The answer is simple... it's the perfect analogy to underscore an important point about how to live a fit lifestyle for the rest of your life. You'll never achieve the ultimate fitness, being fit for life, unless you stay inspired to be fit! Being inspired to be fit is just as important, if not more so, than eating a healthy diet, working out on a regular basis, and taking the right supplements.
Here's another analogy:
To make a point, people ask, "What's the 3 most important factors for a successful retail business?" The answer comes back, "Location, location, location!"Well, if you want to stay fit for life, the 3 most important factors are inspiration, inspiration, and inspiration! In other words, nothing else is more important as inspiration. Why is inspiration so important?
Because inspiration is what keeps you doing all the things you need to do to stay fit! Without being properly inspired, and more importantly, STAYING properly inspired, you'll never keep eating healthy or keep doing the physical exercises and other activities that keep your body fit.
This is because there is a direct connection between your mind and your body. Without being mentally and emotionally inspired to be fit, most people will slip back into an unhealthy lifestyle. So, if you truly want to stay fit for the rest of your life, the question you need to ask yourself is this: "How do I stay inspired ?" While the answer(s) to this important question will be different for everyone, here are some of my suggestions that work well for many people:
1. Clearly State Your Personal Fitness Goals In Writing
Just the act of putting your fitness goals down in writing will inspire you. However, you'll get even more inspiration will when you read these fitness goals over and over! Some people call these "fitness affirmations" and they make it a habit to read their fitness affirmations out loud every day at a certain time. For example, you may want to start your day out by reading your personal fitness goals. Some people prefer to read their affirmations just before they go to sleep. Other people do both and/or read them any time they feel they need a personal "pep talk."
2. Look For Like-minded Workout Partners
Fitness is a powerful bond amongst people. It is a unique experience for those who partake in it. It is one of the few things that can connect different people on a common ground immediately. Working out with a partner(s) can make working out more fun as you encourage each other, develop relationship, and most important get "BETTER RESULTS". Workout partners also keep you motivated on days that you might otherwise be tempted to skip your workout since you will feel an obligation not to let your workout partner down.
3. Pursue Hobbies That Making Staying Fit Fun
There are many fun hobbies that can keep you physically active and mentally stimulated to stay fit over the long haul. These include hiking, bird watching, geocaching, water volleyball, touring the countryside or city on a bike, jogging, clamming, gardening, and kick boxing. The possibilities are endless in fact. If you love animals, getting a dog will motivate you to walk every day and perhaps even run on the beach!
4. Join Online Fitness Communities
Joining a fitness discussion group online is like joining a support group with members from all over the world! You'll receive tips, suggestions, and motivation when you need it. You'll also have the pleasure of reciprocating too. The internet has had a positive influence on our lives in many ways and this is most definitely one of them. However, be sure not to spend too much time on the internet too often and get out and lead an active healthy lifestyle!
The four examples above are the types of motivators you'll need when the "novelty" of working out is over and as you are confronted day after day with unhealthy food options, lack of time, or you are just not in the mood! These are the types of motivators you'll need to stay inspired to be fit for the rest of your life. If you recognize the importance of developing these motivators, and work on putting them into action, you'll never lack for inspiration to stay fit. With a constant infusion of inspiration to stay fit, you will eliminate the primary reason many people backslide. Most importantly, you'll find it much easier to stay fit for the rest of your life!
