2010 Haiti Earthquake
Two blocks of Earth slip past each other, surface where this occurs is called fault or fault plane; earthquakes occur around faults of plate boundaries; Haiti earthquake caused because Caribbean and North American plates slid past each other (strike-slip boundary)
Stress build up along boundary and faults, stress eventually released in a strong movement that moves two sides of fault and generates earthquake; Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system; Caribbean is minor plate so quakes are rare
Epicenter was 10 miles from Port-au-Prince and 6.2 miles below Earth's surface; energy released close to surface because shallow; Haiti is an undeveloped country with poor infrastructure and high population density, crumbled more than a developed country; most Haitians not prepared for earthquake because not common in this area; 7.0 Magnitude; over 3 million people affected and 200,000+ killed, 300,000+ injured; 1.5 million people became homeless; worsened sanitation of drinking water; deforestation leads to pollution; deforestation and destruction to mountains can cause more natural disasters; destroy crops leading to lack of food
Prediction of future earthquakes in Chile, Ecuador, Greece, Italy, Nevada, Romania because of high seismic activity (sudden movement of Earth's crust releasing stress along faults)
CNN Article: Extreme damage; earthquake could be felt strongly in Cuba; cloud of dust covered city during earthquake; at least 10 aftershocks, two with a 5.0 Magnitude; deforestation because people are stripping trees for fuel and clearing land for building and agriculture
Discussion Question: How could the damage have been lessened by efforts of Haitians and is it likely for this to occur in the somewhat near future?
