Monsters

Dana Conard

You're under your blanket
Because there's monsters under your bed
Monsters that your classmates have created
The ones they've created from tearing you down
till there's nothing left
but the monsters under your bed.

When you were little you might've said
'Daddy there's monsters under my bed'
He would check and say
' there's nothing there, go back to bed'
Then tuck you in once again
You'd tremble once then hide.

When you got a little bit older
you might have said
'Daddy there's monsters in my closet'
He would check then say
'there's nothing there, go back to bed'
then tuck you in once again
You'd tremble once the hide.

Many years later you might question
as you lay in the dark and recall the time
that there were monsters once
under your bed
in your closet
you wonder where they've gone to now?

You may not know how it feels
to be bullied and teased but imagine
imagine how it feels to have you confidence
be torn down by being on called names
Picking on you for he things you love
the things that define you.

That creates these monsters.
No longer am I talking about the ones under your bed
i’m talking about the ones
That are inside your head.
These monsters will break you down even further
than your classmates already have.

These monsters tell you the things
the things you've been called before
they say them so often
and so convincing
you start to believe them
Till that's all you believe.

Then they come back and hide under your bed
tormenting you with the troubles
of school
of your past
anything that haunts you
they will remind you of.

These monsters
you can't touch them
you can’t see them
Because they're not really there
These monsters aren't real
These monsters are you.

You’re under your blanket
because there’s monsters under your bed.
The Monsters that your classmates have created
The ones they've created from tearing you down
till there's nothing left
but the monsters in your head.
