WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

EARLY LIFE AND MARRAIGE

Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 around the Stratford area. His father was John Shakespeare, a leather merchant, and his mother was Mary Arden, a local landed heiress. Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564. Shakespeare did not attend a university but did attend King's New School. At the age of 18 Shakespeare married 26 year old Anne Hathaway on November 8, 1582 in Worcester, in Canterbury. They had three children, two of which survived, and one who had died at age 11.

SHAKESPEARE DURING THE BLACK PLAGUE

The Black Plague arrived in Europe in 1347. Shakespeare was born in 1564 and the effects were still horrid. This disease was a nightmare. It had terrible symptoms and was terribly contagious. Shakespeare's siblings Joan, Margaret, Edmund, and Anne were all victims, Shakespeare even lost his son, Hamnet, when he was only 11. Many theaters were closed with each outbreak. Living in this awful time, what would have happened if Shakespeare had been infected? What would the arts and theatre today he like?
