The Little Red Hen

a lesson on theme
Emili Brown

Essential Question: what is the theme of this story

Objective: Students will be able to identify the theme in the story The Little Red Hen.

Activity: in groups students will discuss multiple definitions of what a theme is. after given time to discuss students will be called on using sticks and they will share definitions that will be written on the board to keep a record. after students have shared, I will read the story to them. I have chosen a common folk tale because these stories are easier to find themes in, which is helpful for the beginning of a theme unit. after i read the story i would have the students brainstorm as a class what they think the theme is and have them use evidence to back up their findings.

Materials: copy of The Little Red Hen, white board markers.
