Connecting Chains through "Common Sense"

“Common Sense” Is a pamphlet that was written to encourage the thirteen colonies to rebel against Britain and fight for their independence, also Thomas Paine said “an island can’t control a continent.”

The reason Laurie Halse Anderson chose “Common Sense for her source for chapters one-three was, to stand up for what is right and don’t back down from the enemy. This is shown when Jenny stands up to the family and says “ I’ll take them.” This shows that Jenny is standing up for Ruth and Isabel and wants them to avoid this mean family. another way someone stands up to the enemy is when Jenny stands up to Mr. Robert and says “you listen to my bill mister.” This shows that just because Mr. roberts is a man doesn’t mean Jenny is willing to back down and not stand up for what is right. In conclusion all this evidence shows that the reason Laurie Halse Anderson chose Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” for the source for chapters one through three was to stand up for what is right and not back down to the enemy.

The picture relates to "Common Sense" and "Chains" because if the Americans split up and stay in their states then they will be killed by the British("Common Sense"). But for Sal if she stays with Madam then Madam could kill her if she doesn't leave and escape to freedom.("Chains")
