Brighton Beach Memoirs - Camila M.

A story about a family with many emotional struggles.

The contents in this book is mixed feelings, a crowded house, illnesses, and values along with the whole family.

The Great Depression

The great depression was a severe worldwide economic depression during World War ll. This depression started in the 1930's and ended around the 1940's. This was the longest most severe depression in the history of the 20th century. A weak banking system, over-production of goods, over spending, and wrong use of credit were some of the reasons why this started. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 was one of the main causes of the Great Depression.

Colleges in the 1930's

Tuition in the 1930's was $400 for UCSB. Room and Board: $520 Text-books: $35 Clothing and miscellaneous: $260. The difference from before and now was that college wasn't as expensive as it is today. Back then going to college was not a huge expense as it is today. The mascot for UCSB is the ole.

In the 1930's gas was only 50 cents. Food was very cheap. Groceries were only cents. In the 1930 the average cost of new car was $640.00. What i found interesting was that clothes were not that expenive. with 20dollars you could buy yourself pants, shirts, blouses.. and some more clothes. Shopping was not as expensive as they are right now.

Stan's Apology Letter

Dear Mr. Stroheim,

I am writing you this letter of apology because I feel its needed. At the Moment when I put dirt on your shoes, i was not thinking clearly. I was defending my principles. Clearly, i didn't do it the right way. I am sorry for sweeping dirt on your shoes. It obviously was wrong of me.

I really hope you can consider giving me my job back. me and my family are struggling ecenomically and I can not afford to loose my job. We have seven mouths to feed and one job will not be enough.

M  y family will be very disappointed as well as affected by me loosing my job. I'm really sorry about what i did. It was not the right way to defend my principles.
