Rainer Gruessner - Appointed as University of Arizona Chairman of Surgery

Rainer Gruessner was appointed The University of Arizona Chairman of Surgery and Professor of Immunology in 2007. Ever since, Dr. Gruessner mentored students, residents, fellows and junior faculty to develop into esteemed medical professionals capable of delivering exceptional care to patients.

Dr. Rainer Gruessner has a strong passion for patient care and always strives to develop new surgical innovations. His contributions have led to the implementation of several groundbreaking practices in organ transplantation and general surgery, and several of his procedures were the first of their kind performed in Arizona.

These procedures include the first living and deceased intestinal transplants, the first multivisceral transplant, and the first autologous islet transplant ever in the Southwest.
