The atmosphere of the Earth has 5 layers. The first layer is the the Exosphere. It is the outer most layer of the Earth. It extends into space. It is transitional zone for Earth's atmosphere.

The next layer is the Thermosphere. In this layer, UV rays cause ionization. Ionization is when an atom needs a postitive or negative charge. The Thermosphere is about 85 miles above the Earth. "Therm" means "heat" so it is the warmest layer.

The Mesosphere is the middle layer.  It is the coldest layer. It has lots of winds, gravity waves and planetary waves.

The Stratosphere is the second major layer in the atmosphere. It is warm at the top and cooler at the bottom.

The Troposphere is the lowest layer. It is about 11 miles high.
