Portuguese Ship Captain

The life of a Portuguese ship captain had its ups and downs or pros and cons in other words. The Portuguese ship captain would have to deal with not knowing what was coming ahead. For example, the ocean could be clear as day on a certain day but by the next day turn into choppy waters that could lead to loss of life on the ship. People have to remember that when you think about being on a ship today there are navigational devices and communicative devices, but during these times there was nothing, at least none to the extreme and in depth as in today's society. The Captain could not get to attached to his crew members because it was very common for them to die while on the ship due to malnutrition because there was a diet; since they were at sea there was not much for them to eat so when they ran out of their food supplies it didn't always end well.

Start the video below at 3:22 and stop at 4:05 this video shows that they were not prepared for what was about to happen in their path until it happened. Nothing ever this severe/big happened on a Portuguese ship because none of the ships could reach the same capacity of the Titanic. The Portuguese ship captain would definitely have gone down with his ship if this were to have happened because he felt the responsibility of taking care of everybody aboard the Caravel.

Below is some examples of the major routes that the Portuguese ships went on from place to place for whatever was needed to be done or if they needed to pick up supplies or goods from other places.                                                                                                                         picture from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_India_Armadas

The Portuguese ship captains job was one of the most looked up to because being a captain of something means you are in charge and other people have to report to you for their duties that needed to be done. It was difficult for the captain to stick to the punishments that he had given to people because as people got sick he needed people to fill the jobs of the ones who could no longer do it because those jobs needed to be filled so that the ship would sail smoothly on it's journey. The captains were lucky because they had a small cabin to sleep in while they were on the ship as to the seamen slept wherever they could basically find room on the ship. There would sometimes be overcrowding on the ship so it would make it even harder for the seamen to find somewhere to sleep while the captains would have a place to sleep that was secluded from everybody else no matter what.
