Rita Dove was born in Akron, Ohio in 1952 to Ray Dove the first african chemist. She got a presidential scholar as one of the hundred top american high school graduates in 1970. Rita recieved her B.A from Miami University of Ohio in 1973 and her M.F.A from the University of Iowa in 1977. In 1974 she held a Fulbright scholarship at the Universität Tübingin in Germany. Rita dove taught creative writing at Arizona State University from 1981 to 1989.
Rita dove received the 1987 pulitzer prize in poetry. In 1992 she was named United States Poet by the Librarian Congress, an officer she held from 1993 to 1995. At the age of 40, rita was the youngest person to hold the position and is the first african american to hold the position. Dove had served as the first non-white consultant in poetry. Rita dove never died she is still alive today.
