Reader's Workshop

We continue to work on retelling using transition words and finding the theme of a story. This is great practice for identifying the main idea of stories which can be used with both fiction and non-fiction texts. We also have practiced hunting for contractions in our reading and recognizing the two words that have been put together as one.

Writing Workshop

We have read from How To mentor texts that clearly identify the process of writing how to stories. Students have enjoyed writing stories about how to brush your teeth and bake cookies. Not only do these mentor texts provide a sample for how to formatting, but students have also been learning a lot more about the world around them! We are hoping to get a warmer weather day to walk to Jet’s Pizza and learn how to make a pizza!

Social Studies

-We honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by reading about some of his contributions to the world we live in today. Students compared and contrasted the way we work in school and play at home with friends and how different our lives would be if these big changes in history were not made.

-Looking ahead: Feb. 19 is Chinese New Year, which falls during February break. We will be planning a field trip to Golden Dragon (Mack & Kerby), date TBD. Look out for a permission slip coming home soon! We will be need parent drivers for our 25 booster seat-riding first graders :)

We will begin our solids and liquids unit this month where students will explore the differences between these two states of matter and ways in which we identify their differences.

Collins Comments:

We are almost ready to begin our math scrolls.  Please send in an empty paper towel roll for your child ASAP.  Thank you!
