A prefix is the first part of a word that can the meaning of it like when something happened.  

EX: redo, reuse, replay,

A suffix is the end part of a word that can also change the meaning of when something happened.  

EX: played, crawled, walked,

A root word is the word that can change the prefix and suffix of itself.  

EX: play replay, played, and use used, reuse

You're on the right track, Chasen. Prefixes and suffixes do change the meaning of the word, but the last part you wrote is a bit unclear. Tell me now, what does a root do?
