If your central office and district leaders don’t understand the latest in special education law, what is the worst that can happen?

Unfortunately, you probably know all too well about what can happen. Time-consuming meetings, costly litigation, hearings or mediation, and broken relationships and families and educators that are fed up, burnt out and just plain done.

For 29 years, TCASE has been teaming up with the Texas School Administrators’ Legal Digest to bring you legal conferences designed to keep you out of the courts and hearings, and concentrating on providing quality services for students. Our goal: save you time, money and relationships so you can do what you do best… make a difference for your families.

Topics covered will include:

  • Top legal developments in special education;
  • Legal updates on bullying of students with disabilities;
  • Practical strategies and legal issues regarding student discipline in special education;
  • Special education evaluations; and.
  • Service animals on your campus.

The January Content Specialists and Department Chairs meeting focused on the importance of learner-educator relationships and culturally responsive teaching. Each campus science leader shared information and resources with the campus vertical science team.

Elementary Science Content Specialists will meet on Feb. 12th from 4:00 – 5:00 pm in Kasey Kemp’s classroom (C107) at Town Center Elementary. We will look at Kasey’s Interactive Math and Science Word Walls. We will also focus on the areas of Effective Feedback and Questioning Strategies.

Secondary Science Department Chairs will meet on Feb. 19th from 4:00 – 5:00 pm in Dean Boykin’s classroom (B201) at CMS North. We will focus on Effective Feedback and will begin a discussion on grading practices.

David and I will be visiting science classes this month to see where we are with science practices and where our future needs might be. Please let us know if you would like specific help or support at your campus.

Secondary Instructional Materials Adoption: Educators at many of our secondary campuses are in the process of piloting resources involved in the adoption. We have chosen to add an additional step to our process to ensure a successful adoption. Staci Zugaro, CHS Math Coach, is working to set up a review of materials from top publishers by each of our high school math educators (including Algebra I & Geometry at middle school campuses). The educators will compare a single topic across each of the materials provided, reflect with their PLC, and report back to Staci.

The Federal Report Cards (FRC) have been released by the U.S. Department of Education. The law requires dissemination of the results to parents no later than March 6, 2015. CISD has the link to the state/district/campus FRC posted on the district website under Accountability, and info about the availability of the FRC will be included in Informed. Although advertisement of the FRC availability is being done at the district level, parents may request a paper copy from their campus. Our Youth and Government Coppell Middle Schools Team is gearing up for their 1st appearance at the State competition later this month in Austin. David Norman-CMS-West, Anthony Smith-CMS-East and Davis Scott-CMS-North have directed this group of young people and are very excited about the upcoming State event.

The month of February is designated as Black History Month. Social Studies educators around CISD are highlighting the many contributions and achievements of African Americans in U.S. history, in their learning experiences.

Career and Technical Education (CTE)

On February 11, 12 and 13, CHS and NTH@C learners will be travelling to all three middle school campuses to provide presentations about the various endorsement pathways and offer perspective on the experiences related to different programs at both high schools.

The month of February is recognized as CTE month. Throughout this month, please take a moment to acknowledge the many accomplishments and contributions of our CTE programs this academic year.
