About Rupert Vessey
An accomplished researcher and clinician with more than 15 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Rupert Vessey currently holds the position of head of early development and discovery sciences for Merck Research Laboratories. He started in this role in June 2013, having previously developed innovative medicines for Merck’s respiratory and immunology franchise. As the franchise’s senior vice president, Rupert Vessey also spearheaded a partnership with Merck’s global human health franchise.
Prior to his work at Merck, Rupert Vessey served as vice president of the target discovery division for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). He also served as senior director for GSK’s discovery medicine division before he earned his promotion to VP. In addition, Vessey dealt with immune diseases and respiratory clinical development issues in their early stages.
Rupert Vessey earned his DPhil (PhD) in molecular immunology from the Institute for Molecular Medicine in the United Kingdom. He advanced his clinical training at a number of locations in the UK, including the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Hammersmith Hospital at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, both based in London. In 2012, the Royal College of Physicians in London named Dr. Vessey a fellow.
