Thomas Alleyne's High School
Friday Roundup - 28th November 2014
Tributes to Mrs McLeod our Geography teacher and Head of Torrance have flooded into school last week. A condolences book has been completed by students and staff and this will be shared with Mrs McLeod's family in the coming days. We are now in the process of organising a memorial service for Mrs McLeod which a number of students have asked to take part in. It has been a hard time for both staff and students but I would like to thank parents for their support and kind messages.
I would also like to thank Mr Hawthorne who had been appointed into the role of acting Head of Torrance prior to Mrs McLeod's operation for the work he is doing in supporting students in Torrance.
Changes to reporting systems
This week Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers from schools within the Uttoxeter pyramid met to discuss how we would respond to the government’s policy of removing level descriptors from the National Curriculum. The Department for Education (DfE) has said that levels are not very good with respect to helping parents to understand how far their child is improving. In their place, schools are to develop their own systems to assess pupil's progress. We will keep you informed of any changes to our assessment systems.
Year 11 parent's evening
This will run on Tuesday evening this week. Please ensure your son or daughter seeks as many appointments as possible in order that you are well informed about ways in which you can support them as they prepare for their GCSEs.
Uttoxeter School Review
The final deadline for comments on the 2 tier 3 tier proposals are due on 5th December. The project team held an information evening in the Ede Studio on Tuesday evening. Approximately 45 people attended and asked questions of the team. As a result of this a frequently asked questions section has been added to the website.
Please ensure you look closely at the implications of the change and feedback your views. At this point the question is whether we move to consultation to consider both options in depth.
The Christmas market was a wonderful evening in school. Many students ran stores and our thanks go to the PTA for organising such an excellent event.
Travel & Tourism Visit Stratford
Travel and Tourism students enjoyed a visit to Stratford upon Avon on 14 November. A canal trip and visit to the tourist information centre followed a guided walk of the town. The students are currently investigating how historical towns in the UK attract tourists, so the purpose of the visit was to establish the features and facilities on offer for a range of tourists. The majority of the students had never visited Stratford before and were surprised by how much it has to offer.
Christmas Concert rehearsals are in full swing and tickets are selling out fast. The concert is on Wednesday 17th December at 7pm and seasonal refreshments provided by the PTA are included in the ticket price.
Reminder for rehearsals next week:

Tuesday lunch; Solo and group auditions
Wednesday lunch; Choir, after school; Jazz
Thursday lunch; Saxophone and clarinet sectional, after school; Choir from 3.15 until 4.30

Thank you to the pupils for all their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm so far.
