Joseph Abbitt

Case Report: On May 2, 1991 Two sisters were raped in their home. Seeing the attackers face was very limited but the two girls said that he looked a little like Mr. Abbitt, Mr. Abbitt used to live in the neighborhood and visited the home many times. The girls separately identified Mr. Abbitt in a photo line up, police did do rape kits and the DNA came back undetermined but they still prosecuted Mr. Abbitt. In 2005 Abbitt applied to the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence for help with his case. The organization got the rape kits and did a second round of testing, Proving Abbitt was innocent, After serving 14 years in prison for crimes he didn't commit, he was exonerated.
